Just in case anyone thought I was kidding about never having too much yarn. There are multiples hiding behind the piles, the baskets on the bottom are full of yarn that needs to be sorted & partial skeins and I have several bags of more recently purchased yarn that isn’t picture.

I’m in the middle of organizing my office so try not to hate on all my random crap. lol

I like that you caked all of it. I might do that with my stash. Makes it much easier to see what you’ve got. Thanks for posting this!

THAT HAS NOTHING KNITTING TO DO WITH IT. There’s no yarn, no needles, no crochet hooks, no scarves, no sweaters, no work in progress, no finished projects, heck there’s not even a braid.
Just curly hair.

Why do people over tag things? If what you’re tagging is not in the picture or description, DON’T TAG IT! It’s disappointing and angering.

1. Be Kind. If this is the one thing I manage to do, I’ve done enough. Kindness may seem like a personality trait, but I think of it more as a habitual spiritual practice. Being kind has taught me that simple, seemingly insignificant human interactions can be profound. It has opened people and their stories to me. And, perhaps most important to my work, being kind has taught me that I know far less than I think I do. Always.

2. Love What You Do. This is not a passive thing, or a happenstance of trying to do what you love. It is a proactive, daily decision to nurture and seek satisfaction in the work I am doing. I think of it like marriage: sometimes it’s easy and simple. Sometimes it’s a daily, grinding decision to love. And sometimes, when you can’t do it any more, the last act of love is walking away.

3. Keep Your Brain Spongy. This is the fun part. I’m a big believer in feeding curiosity, and offering my subconscious mind a cornucopia of ideas. I read history, literature, and ancient Chinese murder mysteries. I feed the birds, train my ear to identify distinct birdsong, and try to learn the differences between sparrow species (almost all are the same buffy, brown color). I study physics, the latest developments in the modeling of protein-folding, and the genetic underpinnings of personality. I dig big holes in the yard, play and talk with animals, and right now I’m thinking about buying a metal detector. I am never bored.

4. Do the Next, Most Interesting Thing. This is a corollary of keeping your brain spongy, but it requires a very loose hold on one’s life-plans. In fact, I do very little life-planning at all; for better or worse, no career path can hold my attention for very long. So when people ask me how I became an NPR correspondent at such a young age, (or for that matter, how I ended up with a bit part in a Mexican telenovela) my best answer is that I didn’t really mean to. I just did a long series of the next, most interesting things. It’s kind of an informed version of winging-it.

I kind of really like it, and it seems like it should be a pretty simple thing to find a pattern for (well, it or something quite similar), but I can’t for the life of me find any such thing.

Anyone got ideas?

That’s going to be a vintage pattern. But Karabella KK219 (Google it) comes close. That’s such a simple cable you could probably find a more complicated version somewhere and just replace their fancy cable with the simple one, swatch and math but still.

I’ve seen many posts on Tumblr of people’s yarn stash with the hashtag or comment “I have a problem.”

What is the problem, exactly?

It is high time we fiber-nistas accepted that we are artists. No one ever told Van Gogh he had too much paint. It saddens me to see people who clearly have talent or desire to attain talent announcing to the world that they don’t deserve to have the tools and supplies to reach their artistic potential.

Yes, that goes for ball winders and swifts, pretty stitch markers, and the exact kind of needles and hooks that feel good in our hands. Also, high quality natural fibers. Artists deserve studio space, too.

It is not a good idea to go deeply into debt for your art or to hoard yarn that you will never use. I frequently purge my stash and give away yarn to people I know will appreciate it. But there is a difference between frugality and austerity, and starving your artist-self with blame, guilt, and self-denial is just wrong.

Go grab some yarn you like out of your stash and knit for a while. You’re an artist. Enjoy your palette, enjoy your work, and give of yourself.

This is Gladys. She lives next door to my coworker, Cameron, and has a dog named Gertie and a husband named Les. She brings the mail over every day, and one time she brought Cameron’s dad a brownie for his birthday.

Gladys lives a life of suffering. She has Alzheimer’s, and all she wants is someone to talk to. Les just yells at her, and Gertie doesn’t understand her because she’s a dog. One day, she told Cameron, “Gertie wants to see you.” Cameron responded, “Oh, that’s cute. Bye.” All Gladys wanted was some company.

Gladys has a glass eye, and nobody knows why because nobody will take the time to listen to her story. Most people don’t even notice it, except for small children.

We need to raise awareness for Gladys. She’s a lonely old woman, and nobody even knows if she has LifeAlert or not. All I’m asking is that you reblog this and keep Gladys in your prayers.

work three stitches, decrease one stitch now and every ten stitches until you have decreased four times, work to end. It won’t be perfect but it will work. Give yourself permission to be a little less than perfect.

Actually, the paper won’t help you. Everyone’s stitches per inch is different— some knitters knit loosely, some tightly. The guage Red Heart states for the yarn is an approximation. They guess you’ll knit about 17 stitches for every four inches or 4 1/4 stitches per inch. So you could try casting on 38-40 stitches, knit for a couple inches, and see how it measures up, but be aware you may have to rip out if your measurement is off.

That said, if you are consistent with your squares and always cast on the same number of stitches and use the same pattern, each square will be the same size. If they’re off by a stitch width or so, it shouldn’t matter. Good luck!
